Combining Edges and Points for Interactive Anti-Aliased Rendering

چکیده
This paper presents a new rendering and display paradigm that uses both discontinuities (edges) and sparsely sampled shading (points) to interactively generate anti-aliased images of complex scenes. Geometric and shadow discontinuities in the image are found at interactive rates using a novel data structure, the Normal–Position Interval tree, and algorithms based on interval arithmetic. After projecting discontinuities onto the image plane, shading information is interpolated from nearby point samples while never interpolating across a discontinuity edge. We introduce a new compact representation of the discontinuities and point samples called the edge-andpoint image. An efficient interpolation algorithm uses this image to generate anti-aliased output images at interactive rates without using supersampling. Our rendering technique is extensible, permitting the use of arbitrary shaders to collect radiance samples. Our software implementation supports interactive navigation and object manipulation in scenes that include complex lighting effects (such as global illumination) and geometrically complex objects. We show that highquality anti-aliased images of these scenes can be rendered at several frames per second on typical desktop machines.

Extended shadow maps
The most popular methods for interactive hard shadows rendering are shadow volumes and shadow maps. Shadow volumes generate precise shadows but require high fill rate. Due to excessive fill rate requirements, shadow maps are probably the most widely used means for generation of shadows, despite their well known aliasing problems. In this paper, Extended Shadow Maps are introduced, as a means to...
متن کاملAutomatic Feature Modeling Techniques for Volume Segmentation Applications
In many volume segmentation and visualization tasks, the ability to correctly identify the boundary surface of each volumetric feature of interest in the data is desirable. This surface can be used in subsequent quantitative study of the segmented features. In this paper, we present an automatic approach to generate accurate representations of a feature of interest from volume segmentation. Our...
متن کاملCorrect resolution rendering of trimmed spline surfaces
Current strategies for real-time rendering of trimmed spline surfaces re-approximate the data, pre-process extensively or introduce visual artifacts. This paper presents a new approach to rendering trimmed spline surfaces that guarantees visual accuracy efficiently, even under interactive adjustment of trim curves and spline surfaces. The technique achieves robustness and speed by discretizing ...
متن کاملCreative relighting in compositing based on z depth
The faster turnaround times in modern vfx productions force companies and artist to come up with ideas to speed up every part of the pipeline and to be able to change the final image fast. One of the most time consuming steps is the rendering step. Once the parameters are set rendering takes place for a long time. Should lighting and surface properties change re-rendering is veryexpensive and t...
متن کاملClustered Deep Shadow Maps for Integrated Polyhedral and Volume Rendering
This paper presents a hardware-accelerated approach for shadow computation in scenes containing both complex volumetric objects and polyhedral models. Our system is the first hardware accelerated complete implementation of deep shadow maps, which unifies the computation of volumetric and geometric shadows. Up to now such unified computation was limited to software-only rendering . Previous hard...
